  "Mentoring Program at the Beach" - November 2005

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maryland rolled out a brand new monthly mentoring group for the Chesapeake Beach area in late 2005. This North Beach specific program matches Beach Elementary School students with Community Members as well as Northern High School students to serve as mentors. Each trained volunteer mentor will meet with their Little Brother or Sisters monthly to help with homework, play games or just talk. The meetings will take place at the Northeast Community Center the third Monday of each month. (Alternative Mondays will be scheduled for school closings.)

By spending just 1 1/2 hours each month with a child who could use a friend, imagine the difference you can make in your community. Children in site-based mentoring programs have achieved higher grades; they develop a more positive attitude toward school and are better able to express their feelings.

Big Brothers Big Sisters holds monthly Little Moments… Big Magic… Information Sessions at the Charlotte Hall office. These sessions are free and designed to share with you all of the great work BBBS does for the children in the tri-county area. Come and meet some of the staff and hear about the wonderful new initiatives the organization has implemented to reach all the children in the Southern Maryland area who could use a friend and mentor.
